Tour Details
The Douro Valley is one of the great wonders of Portugal, and from Porto you can have a great day tour exploring some of the best spots of this famous wine region. Peso da Régua, Pinhão and the marvelous N222 road that connects these two towns are some ‘must do’ of Douro, where the vineyards carved on the hills are the proof of both the hard work and the ingenuity of those who found out that you can have a great wine in a rough mountainous terrain.
The Port wine is a symbol of this region, but also one of the best ‘ambassadors’ of Portugal itself. Wine was already produced in the Douro river valley more than 2.000 years ago, and the demarcation of the production area in 1756 made it the first official wine region of the World. UNESCO classified the Douro winemaking region as a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Starting from your hotel or apartment in Oporto, we take the highway towards Amarante, to gain some time before starting to explore the smaller country roads. What we want is the Douro river, so we take the road to Peso da Régua, passing many small villages with the church towers still imposing the day rhythm with their bells; different agricultural fields, and some bigger towns like Mesão Frio. Already touching the waters of Douro, Peso da Régua is known as one of the great ‘wine capitals’ of the world, because of its strategic location that made this town an important trading post for both trains and river boats. We can have a short walk here, or even a visit in the Douro Museum, but we can also continue towards the valley, to visit a winery and estate.
Right outside Régua we find a ‘code’ that is starting to get its own recognition, the N222. This is the code of the road that follows the Douro river before reaching Pinhão, and it’s considered one of the best scenic drives of the world. Right at the start we can take a look at the Bagaúste Dam, where some boats can pass a gate and continue up the river, beating a 30 meter slope. Then the 27 kilometer section of the road, with 93 turns, makes you want to stop almost at any open space where the car can pull over, admiring the colors of the river, the natural landscape, the vineyards, the olive trees and some of the most famous wine estates of Douro up on the hills. Don’t worry, there are several places worth a stop.
Reaching Pinhão, you can sense the love everyone has for the river. This quiet small town sits right in one of the wide turns of the river, creating an immense open area in the middle of the hills. Walking through the town, the train station is another place to visit, famous for its blue, white and yellow tile panels, ‘azulejos’, that depict the landscape and also farming and wine making scenes. If we have time and you’re interested, you can also take a short boat ride to enjoy the views from the river. It’s also a nice place to have a tasty lunch with a regional menu.
Before heading back, we climb the hill behind Pinhão to one of the best overlooks of the Douro, the ‘Miradouro de Casal de Loivos’, where you can admire the river down below, Pinhão, and the other hills that surround the town. In this small village of Casal de Loivos you can also visit a small wine and olive oil mill turned into a museum. We’re sure you won’t want to leave back to Oporto, but we can promise there will be some other great stops in this region before catching the highway.

FAQ´s – Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum number of passengers per vehicle?
The car, a Sedan type vehicle, carries up to 4 passengers, but we recommend that you only travel a maximum of 3 passengers for your safety and comfort. As for the VAN, it transports up to 7 passengers + the guide/driver.
If there are more than 7 passengers, how do I book?
If you want to make a reservation and there are more than 7 passengers, you will need to make 2 separate reservations.
What is the hygiene protocol?
The hygiene protocols are:
- Places of constant access will be regularly disinfected
- Equipment will be disinfected between use
- Transport vehicles will be regularly disinfected
Will I have contact with the guide?
Yes, the day before our commercial department will send you by WhatsApp or email all the tour information as well as the name and contact of the guide.
Will you pick us at our accommodation, house or hotel?
The driver will pick you up at the entrance to your hotel or apartment, or another location that is more suitable for both. Don’t worry, the day before the tour you will be contacted by the guide and he will arrange everything with you.
What time does the tour start and end?
Usually the 8-hour tours start between 9:00 am and 10:00 am and ends between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm. For the 4 hour tours, half day, usually between 9:00 am and 10:00 am and ends at 1:00 pm/2:00 pm. Arrange everything with your guide!
What kind of clothes should I bring?
Choose comfortable clothes and shoes, because will always be some walking time and Portugal has warm, sunny days for most of the year.
Bring a bathing suit for a possible swim.
