Ponta de São Lourenço is the most eastern end of Madeira Island, occupying nine kilometers in length, in the form of a peninsula, at the end of which are the islet of Desembarcadouro (Islet of Metade or Cevada) and the islet of Farol ( islet of Ponta de São Lourenço or de Fora).

In this area, Baía d’Abra assumes a particular landscape relief, which, due to its configuration and great extension, provides excellent anchorage conditions. To the west, after the Quinta do Lorde marina, is the picturesque Prainha – a small beach with dark sand. Overlooking this is Morro da Piedade, a volcanic cone, where a chapel allusive to Nossa Senhora da Piedade was erected in the 16th century. To the north of Prainha, the Dunas da Piedade stand out. This dune building holds Quaternary fossils, 300,000 years old, constituting unique records in Europe. Fossilized roots can be found here, which indicate the ancestral existence of much more abundant and larger vegetation than the one that now characterizes the area.

The Desembarcadouro islet and the entire end of the peninsula up to the stone wall of Baía d’Abra were acquired by the Region, through an initiative of the Madeira Natural Park Service, in 1994. one of the IFCN reception centres , it was built by private individuals in the mid-20th century, with the aim of serving as a place of refuge and vacation.

We can see other bird species such as the Berthelot’s Pipit, the Goldfinch and the Canary.
