Alentejo Region
The trip to Évora and back lets us have great look and feel of the Alentejo region. It’s a great scenic ride, even in the freeway, for we pass the famous cork trees, agricultural plains, vineyards, and many small towns and villages.

Évora
The Roman Temple, the Cathedral and its museums, the Giraldo Square and the Bones Chapel are the main highlights of the city of Évora. But the small ancient streets inside this walled city are also worth the visit.

Cartuxa
Very close to Évora, the Cartuxa winery is worth a visit, whether it’s just to buy some of the best wines of Portugal or to have also a guided tour. For the tour, we have to program at least a few days in advance. The monastery, where some very secluded monks still live, can also be seen close by

Monsaraz
One hour away, Monsaraz is a very scenic village inside a castle on top of a hill. The fortress that defended the area against the spanish offers a view for dozens of kms, with the immense Alqueva lake spreading out down below. Monsaraz can be visited, and it’s really worth the trip, even for the lunch break, but we have to cut back some time in Évora to do it.

Tour Details
Considered the capital of the wine, cork and olive oil region of Alentejo, Évora gained influence early in the Roman Empire, because of the routes passing by and the vast fertile lands around. The center of the walled city is a World Heritage Site, where one can easily walk to the best spots. The castle village of Monsaraz, overlooking the massive lake formed by the Alqueva Dam, is also worth a visit.
The vast plains and the ‘noble and always loyal’ city of Évora have great stories to tell and a lot to show. Stories of bravery, like the ones that involve the local hero Gerald the Fearless; or also of luck, like the reason why one of the main monuments of Évora, the Roman Temple, is still there. Also stories of life and death. Where else can you see 5.000 monks in one small room?
After a 130 km ride through the plains, where cork trees grow slowly as bulls and sheep rest in their shade, we reach the great walled city and visit the Roman Temple of Évora. It dates back 2.000 years, in the time of emperor Augustus. Following the medieval paths to the center we find the romanic-gothic cathedral, with a terrace overlooking the entire city and the plains. The first ships that sailed to India from Portugal, led by Vasco da Gama, had their flags blessed here before the departure in Lisbon.
Continuing down the ancient streets we reach the square dedicated to Geraldo Geraldes, the warrior who conquered Évora back from the moors and led other military campaigns in the area, some successful others not so much.
Another ‘must see’ in Évora is the impressive Bones Chapel at Saint Francis Church. The bones and the skeletons of thousands of monks, placed carefully all around the walls and ceiling, are supposed to make one meditate on the human existence. “Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos”. This Portuguese expression written at the entrance sums up everything, ask us what it means.
Depending on the time left and particular interests, we can visit the famous Cartuxa Winery. It was named after the Carthusian monastery that still exists in the estate, home to just a few very secluded monks. Some of the best wines in Portugal and even the World are produced here.
Nearby are also a few towns worth a visit. But Monsaraz, to the South and closer to Spain, stands out. It is an impressive fortified village that served as guard against Spanish invasions. One can have a 360 degree view for dozens of kms. It also overlooks the lake Alqueva, created by a dam with the same name, the biggest man-made lake in Europe.
This tour can be adapted along the way, but the guide can also help you decide, during the trip to Évora, how to spend the day. We can stay only around Évora, or we can make a quicker visit and move out to have lunch and go to Monsaraz. We can also program, but that has to be booked in advance, a guided visit to Cartuxa or another famous winery.
